VPN, which stands for Virtual Private Network, is a type of computer network that uses packet-switched data exchanges over a public or private intranet. This type of IP provider provides anonymity to its users in that they are able to mask their true IP address and location by connecting through another computer on the network that appears to be in another location.
VPsN can be used for a variety of reasons ranging from digital copyright
infringement, whistleblowing, subscribers using relatives' broadband access
where the ISP monitors what websites are visited and blocks them. It's also
used by employees who work remotely without having to worry about spying at
work.
The most common example is people using it as an easy way out after trying too hard financially with their TV / news provider to get them to cancel the "red button" channels.
VPNs are typically used by corporations or individuals with a high level of computer knowledge. This is because they are typically associated with the use of encryption technologies, which can be complicated and difficult to set up.
